I don't know if you've seen the pictures of the Mozambican man burned alive. Or if you've seen videos of the hundreds of thousands - hundreds of thousands - refugees. These are people who came to South Africa from Somalia, the DRC, Rwanda, Mozambique, Zambia, Ghana and especially recently Zimbabwe. They came here because South Africa was an island in Africa, safe, prosperous. Here there would be no death squads, no war, no militias stealing children to brainwash them into another generation of killers. No starvation. South Africa was a second chance. They came to us. They came as refugees and we have made them refugees again. Why? Why? in the past 3 weeks the townships have exploded with violence against foreigners, their businesses - informal spaza shops and shoe repair mostly - looted. The government points at the gangs while failing to mobilise support. Conspiracy theories fly around, President Mbeki orchestrated it with Mugabe, so he could get his citizens back to Zimbabwe. Zuma encouraged it with his campaign promises to get rid of foreigners. There is a violence in the hearts of South Africans. A deep, frustrated violence that is looking to make itself felt. We are the murder capital of the world.
